a gospel of love

So, the election happened. And Facebook and Twitter make it look like almost everyone in our country hates each other right now, so I just wanted to shed some light on a totally different perspective: a gospel of love.

I assume most everyone reading this right now is a Christ-follower, and if you are, I just want to remind you of something Jesus said.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.” – Matthew 5:38-39

First, I don’t know who you voted for, but that does not matter for what I want to say. Either way, yes you do have a right to your opinion, but God has called us to share our opinion in love. If people start hating on you for your opinion, let them. IT’S OKAY. I PROMISE. If God convicted you to feel a certain way towards one candidate or another, then I’m glad that you were able to vote for who you felt called to vote for by God. But there’s no need to defend your opinion because God defends himself.

It’s really a beautiful thing. God has stood the test of time. His Word has lasted through the ages, and who are we to think our words of bitterness and anger will change anyone’s mind or especially lead them closer to knowing their Heavenly Father. Oftentimes, our attempts at “defending God” cause people to harbor more anger towards us when we need to just let God be God. He is sovereign and has always been in control, and He will always prove himself to be right. That’s not our job.

When we say words our of our anger or hate, we are not showing the rest of our country or the world what we supposedly stand for as Christ followers.

Proverbs 10:12 says, “Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.”

The one thing Jesus repeated time and time again in the New Testament was to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. At ALL times. In ALL circumstances. Through EVERY season.

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” – 1 John 4:7

So, here’s the even cooler thing. No matter how bad it may seem in the present, the election only elects the ruler for one country for the next four years.

Christ followers, we need a perspective change.

Our real Ruler has been elected as King over all of the earth, not just over one country, and not just for four years, but since the beginning of time. And guess what, he is still in control. He is still good.

“For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations.” – Psalm 22:28

I know a lot of people think our country is doomed while others are rejoicing, but in the light of the gospel, this is a four year time span in a story that’s been going on for thousands of years.

We need a reality check. We need to realize our purpose as Christ followers and live up to it. We are on this earth to love God and love others and to make His name known. Not to hate or criticize or live in fear of what the future holds because guess what, God has already conquered that too.

“Be a good citizen. All governments are under God. Insofar as there is peace and order, it’s God’s order. So live responsibly as a citizen. If you’re irresponsible to the state, then you’re irresponsible with God, and God will hold you responsible.” – Romans 13:1-2 MSG

  1. Heather I finally got a chance to read this and this is so good. I am continuously floored by what you have to say. For a relatively new believer you are wise beyond your years. It just goes to show that you are truly seeking the Lord and He is speaking through you. Thank you so much for sharing. I love you and miss you.
